Il corso si propone di fornire gli strumenti necessari atti a favorire la comprensione di testi di carattere medico-scientifico per consentire ai corsisti di adoperare correttamente le strutture linguistiche e la terminologia specialistica utilizzata nei diversi contesti comunicativi e professionali del settore sanitario. L’obiettivo del corso è rivolto dunque a promuovere e sviluppare le abilità di lettura, comprensione e analisi di brani e/o articoli scientifici tratti da testi e/o siti web di riferimento. Durante le lezioni saranno trattati anche i principali aspetti grammaticali e sintattici della lingua inglese attraverso la presentazione e svolgimento di attività ed esercitazioni accuratamente selezionate, al fine di consolidare le competenze linguistico-comunicative dei corsisti. 

MEDICAL READINGS: 

- Healthcare in Italy. - The Body Systems. - The Nervous System. Some diseases affecting the Nervous System: migraine headache; 

epilepsy; hemiplegia. - The Cardiovascular System. The Heart. Some diseases affecting the Cardiovascular 

System: myocarditis; angina pectoris; myocardial infarction. - The Blood. Some diseases affecting the red and white blood cells. White blood cells. 

Red blood cells. Blood clotting. - The Respiratory System. Some diseases affecting the Respiratory System: laryngitis; 

pneumonia; silicosis. - The Digestive System. Some diseases affecting the Digestive System: acute pancreatitis; 

gastric ulcer, Chron’s disease; colorectal cancer, cirrhosis, hepatitis, alcohol abuse. - Diet. Sports activities and diet. The high fibre diet. Eating disorders: bulimia nervosa. - Diagnostic Tests in the Neurosurgery Department: electroencephalogram: brainwaves. Diagnostic tests in the Radiology Department; computerized axial tomography (CT scan). In the laboratory: shelf life, storage and preparation of a test. Viruses. - The Coronavirus: what scientists have learned so far. 

GRAMMAR POINT 

-The alphabet -The present tense of the verb “to be” – “to have”: affirmative, negative and interrogative forms. -The definite article “the” -The indefinite article “a”, “an” -The Cardinal numbers; the ordinal numbers -Calculations – Decimals – Fractions. -There is/there are. -The plural of nouns. Regular and irregular nouns -The demonstrative adjectives -The possessive case; -Wh-questions. -The present simple of the ordinary verbs: affirmative, negative and interrogative sentences. -The present continuous: affirmative, negative, interrogative forms. Short answers. -Frequency adverbs -Quantifiers: “some”, “any”, “no”, “none” -Prepositions of place: “in”, “on”, “under”, etc..; Prepositions of time: “in”, “on”, “at, etc. -Imperative form; -The Past Simple of the verb “to be”; The Past Simple of the verbs; -The Past Continuous; -The Present Perfect; -The Present Perfect with “ever”, “never”, “gone”, “been”, ”just”, “already”, “yet”, “still”. -Object pronouns, possessive adjectives and pronouns; reflexive pronouns. -Modal verbs; “can”, “could”, “may”, “must”, “shall”, “have to” , “should”. -Future forms: “will” “won’t”, “to be going to”, present continuous with future meaning; -Comparative and superlative adjectives; -The passive form.
